In December 2016, I visited sled dog handlers Amrah(26) and Marije(30) in Norway. Both of them choose to trade their ‘regular’ lives for a life abroad, close to nature. They live on a sled dog farm where they take care of 40 Alaskan Huskies, owned by dogmusher Stein Håvard Fjestad. I lived with them for a month, hopped on the sled and photographed them daily.
The farm is located in the remote woods of Slettås. Nothing but forest, mountains and marshes…the wilderness. Here, they take the time to be with the dogs and connect with nature. In fact, the huskies are all that matters.
The dogs are being trained for long distance races at the highest level. It’s a full-time job to let these athletes run and give them all the care they need. In peak season they easily run 80 kilometers a day, sometimes in tough weather with temperatures down to – 20 degrees. Alaskan Huskies are known for their loyalty and intelligence – no matter what the conditions are, they will bring you home.
